For all submitted works to Battle of the Bits the following is true:
• no rights are waived by the original artist
• BotB has permission to redistribute
Summary
Battle of the Bits is a passion project and tries to avoid existing as a business whenever possible. These licenses act as simple safeguards against any possible liability surrounding the redistribution of works submitted to its archive. Redistribution by BotB includes serving it as content on this website and/or reposting on other websites.
Redistributions
Bandcamp - Originally all releases were free (aka "name your own price"). One of Bandcamp's automagic mechanisms changes all free releases to $5 if an account reaches 100 donloads in a single month. New releases are marked as free until the next is released.
Youtube - This account has yet to reach the requirements for monetization. This could definitely change in the future as ~80% of requirements are met at this time (Nov 2024).
All monetary income resulted from redistribution is used to cover costs including (but not limited to) hosting, maintenance, feature development, and placating the ancient ones.
History
The (mandatory) Creative Commons licenses were introduced to BotB in 2011 for the Winter Chip VI battle. BotB assigns two licenses to all entries: 1) to disallow unauthorized commercial or uncredited use of the work by third parties, and 2) allow BotB to distribute their work in any way BotB wants so long as there is attribution to the artist.
CC Licenses Specifically:
•
Creative Commons Attribution NonCommerical ShareAlike License will be displayed on the entry's page.
•
BotB reserves a
Creative Commons Attribution NoDerivative License on this entry so long as the entry is available for free to the BotB community (which is also free).
